Tesla’s new Robotaxi app is already making waves on the Apple App Store. Launched late Thursday, the app quickly rose to No. 6 among the platform’s most downloaded free apps and claimed the top spot in the travel category, ahead of ride-hailing giants Uber and Lyft.

The app, available for iOS users, is not yet a full-fledged ride-hailing service. Instead, it allows users to sign up for a waitlist for Tesla’s upcoming autonomous taxi program. The company is currently piloting a fleet of about 30 autonomous vehicles in Austin, Texas, and is also preparing a ride-hailing service in the San Francisco Bay Area.

CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the app’s early traction on X, sharing the download milestone with his more than 190 million followers.

While the app’s chart performance underscores Tesla’s ability to draw attention, it does not yet translate into a functional Robotaxi service for most users. The company has not announced a timeline for when customers outside of pilot markets will be able to book rides through the platform.

Tesla first unveiled its Robotaxi concept in August, positioning the service as a competitor to Uber and Lyft by removing human drivers entirely. The project is seen as a key step in Tesla’s efforts to monetize its self-driving technology and expand beyond vehicle sales.
