Netflix’s hit show Outer Banks dropped a trailer ahead of its third season, which premieres this month. The trailer appeared to confirm some fan theories, and raise even more question marks about what the new season could hold.

The show follows a group of teens from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. They view the people of the Outer Banks in two categories–the working class Pogues, and the wealthy Kooks. Lines become blurred when John B.’s father goes missing under mysterious circumstances, and he falls for Sarah Cameron, the daughter of a wealthy Kook.
Season two famously left off with the Pogues and their new friend from the Bahamas, Cleo (Carlicia Grant) narrowly escaping their enemies and landing on a deserted island somewhere in the Caribbean. And then, a bombshell is revealed–John B.’s father is alive, after the locals of Outer Banks had long assumed he was dead.
One theory about season three is that Kiara (Madison Bailey) would end up in a relationship with JJ (Rudy Pankow). Kiara’s character initially took an interest in her longtime friend John B. (Chase Stokes), who ends up dating her childhood friend Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline). Pope (Jonathan Daviss) is briefly involved with Kiara, but they wind up deciding they are better off as friends. Kiara and JJ’s characters, who come from vastly different backgrounds, share a hunger for adventure, and a desire to run away from their hometown.
can you believe that this scene happens at JJ’s home.

Sarah Cameron’s father, Ward Cameron (Charles Esten, formerly of The Office and Nashville) rapidly became a notorious villain of the show for his involvement in John B.’s father’s disappearance and the ongoing war between the Pogues and Kooks. He maintains a rocky relationship with his son Rafe (Drew Starkey), and fans were excited to see Rafe finally sticking up for himself in the trailer.

Despite the initial excitement, fans were then left with more questions than answers by the end of the trailer. Sarah and Rafe appear to help their wounded father, who survived the altercation from the end of the last season.

The show’s first season was released in 2020 at the height of COVID-19 quarantine, and it rapidly gained a vast fanbase among Gen Z. Though the script may seem far-fetched, the natural dialogue between the characters was praised, and it was later revealed that much of it was improvised.

Outer Banks’ massive success has paved the way for more acting opportunities for several members of its young cast. Madelyn Cline most recently had a role in Glass Onion, from the popular Knives Out franchise, Rudy Pankow had a role in Uncharted alongside Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, and Madison Bailey has had roles in American Horror Stories, a spinoff of Ryan Murphy’s cult classic series American Horror Story.
Season three drops on February 23 on Netflix.
