As SZA gears up for the international leg of her Grand National Tour with Kendrick Lamar, she’s still carving out time to collaborate with fellow artists, including longtime friend Lizzo.

In a series of Instagram Stories posted early Friday, June 20, SZA gave fans a sneak peek of a new musical collaboration with the “Juice” hitmaker. The posts showed snippets of Lizzo’s upcoming music, with SZA’s vocals audibly layered into the track. “Working on a guest star for bookie @lizzobeeating’s new mixtape,” SZA wrote in one of the captions, calling it a “lil after-dinner session.”

A Friendship Turned Creative Partnership

The collaboration marks another chapter in SZA and Lizzo’s enduring friendship. In a recent conversation with pop breakout Chappell Roan for Interview Magazine, SZA reflected on the spontaneous bond they formed in 2013.

“One day, we were on the same tour, and I was like, ‘We’re about to drive out to Lake Michigan, do you want to come?’ And she was like, ‘Yeah, let’s go,’” SZA recalled. “We just got drunk and hung out, and we kept doing that.”

Their relationship has gradually evolved from casual hangouts to frequent collaborations. In 2023, SZA appeared on a remix of Lizzo’s hit single “Special,” and Lizzo later joined SZA on stage during a stop on the Grand National Tour in Los Angeles.

Lizzo’s Album Rollout and “Still Bad” Controversy

While SZA referred to the project as a mixtape, it may be linked to Lizzo’s forthcoming album, Love in Real Life. In March, Lizzo announced that the record was officially finished, posting to Instagram that she’d wrapped it up the same day she underwent an emergency root canal and was announced as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live.

The album’s first single, “Still Bad,” has received mixed reactions online, particularly over its energetic sound amid Lizzo’s ongoing social media scrutiny. Responding on X (formerly Twitter), Lizzo called out the criticism, arguing that joyful music has always been central to Black musical history.

“‘Still Bad’ is a break-up song with the world,” she explained. “I’m out here reclaiming rock n roll for US.”

What’s Next for SZA and Lizzo

This collaboration arrives as SZA and Kendrick Lamar wrap the U.S. leg of their 2025 Grand National Tour. The next stretch kicks off in Europe this July, with stops in Paris, London, Barcelona and Rome, before concluding in Australia this December.

Meanwhile, fans eagerly await official details about Lizzo’s next release, whether it’s a mixtape or full album, and the extent of SZA’s involvement.

Fan Reactions

Fans of both artists quickly took to social media to express excitement over the collaboration.
