President Donald Trump announced on May 8, 2025, the appointment of Jeanine Pirro, a former judge, prosecutor, and Fox News host, as the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Pirro, 73, is set to replace Ed Martin, who withdrew his nomination after facing bipartisan criticism over his lack of prosecutorial experience and partisan views.

Pirro brings a wealth of legal experience to the position. She served as the first female district attorney of Westchester County, New York, from 1994 to 2005, where she established the nation’s first Domestic Violence Bureau. Her tenure in law enforcement was marked by a focus on domestic abuse and crimes against the elderly.

In addition to her legal career, Pirro has been a prominent media figure. She joined Fox News in 2006 and hosted “Justice with Judge Jeanine” until 2022. In 2022, she became a permanent co-host of “The Five,” the network’s afternoon program.

President Trump praised Pirro’s qualifications, stating, “Jeanine is incredibly well qualified for this position, and is considered one of the top district attorneys in the history of the state of New York.” He expressed confidence in her ability to serve effectively in this critical role.

Pirro’s appointment continues a trend of former Fox News personalities joining the Trump administration. Notably, Pete Hegseth, a former Fox News host, was named Secretary of Defense earlier this year. This pattern reflects the administration’s preference for individuals with media backgrounds who align with its political agenda.

The District of Columbia’s U.S. Attorney’s Office is one of the most significant prosecutorial positions in the country, overseeing federal cases in the nation’s capital. Pirro’s appointment is expected to bring her legal expertise and media prominence to the role.

Fox News Media expressed support for Pirro’s new position, stating, “Jeanine Pirro has been a wonderful addition to The Five over the last three years and a longtime beloved host across FOX News Media who contributed greatly to our success throughout her 14-year tenure.” The network wished her the best in her new role in Washington.

As interim U.S. Attorney, Pirro will oversee federal prosecutions in Washington, D.C., including cases involving public corruption, civil rights violations, and other significant federal offenses. Her appointment is subject to Senate confirmation, and it remains to be seen how her legal background and media presence will influence her approach to the position.

Pirro’s appointment marks a significant development in the Trump administration’s approach to staffing key legal positions, highlighting the ongoing intersection of media and politics in shaping federal leadership.
