An off-duty New York City fire chief became a hero on August 12 when he pulled a man from a burning car on a Brooklyn highway. The dramatic rescue took place on Belt Parkway and was performed by FDNY Deputy Chief George Healy, who was en route to Disney World with his family at the time.

According to a Facebook post by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), Healy was driving along Belt Parkway when he encountered a severe accident that had brought traffic to a halt. The FDNY post, shared on August 17, details Healy’s swift and courageous actions.

“I jumped out of the car and started running up the highway when I saw a significant accident,” Healy recalled. “There were two cars involved and debris scattered across the entire highway. One of the cars had its engine compartment on fire.”

Healy quickly assessed the situation and focused on rescuing the driver of the burning vehicle, which was rapidly becoming engulfed in flames. The car’s passenger door was severely damaged and could not be opened, and fire was spreading up the windshield.

“I pushed the airbag away and saw that there was an unconscious man in the back seat,” Healy said.

With the help of a local police officer, who had smashed out the driver’s side window, Healy was able to gain access to the vehicle. Despite their efforts, the victim was trapped by his seatbelt, and the car was filling with smoke as the fire in the engine compartment threatened to consume the entire vehicle.

“We managed to get the door open, but the victim was entangled in his seatbelt,” Healy explained. “The car was filling with smoke, and the fire was spreading quickly. We had a very limited time to get him out.”

Healy and the officer worked together to free the man from the backseat and pull him to safety. Their quick actions ensured that the man was removed from the car before the flames could cause further harm.

Healy, a 34-year veteran of the FDNY, expressed his commitment to helping others. “I’m a New York City firefighter; that’s what New York City firefighters do,” he said.

The rescued man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn by paramedics. According to reports, he is currently in stable condition.

The incident highlights the bravery and selflessness of first responders, whether on or off duty. Healy’s actions not only saved a life but also exemplify the dedication of firefighters to public safety.

In the aftermath of the rescue, Healy’s actions have been widely praised, and the incident has garnered significant attention, underscoring the vital role of emergency responders in ensuring community safety.
