Summary:

  • Lollapalooza in Chicago faced safety concerns due to lack of strict checking of vaccine/test records.

  • A woman’s viral TikTok video exposes how easy it was to bypass security at Lollapalooza.

  • Issues arise with the festival’s speed-over-accuracy technique of checking vaccination records, leading to potential exposure concerns.

Lollapalooza, a popular musical festival, took place in Chicago this last weekend despite concerns of the Delta variant becoming more relevant and serious. Many on the internet voiced their concerns over the safety of Lollapalooza, despite the festival announcing previously that a negative COVID-19 test would be required upon entering the festival.

Many were concerned upon hearing that there was a lack of throughout checking of both vaccination records and test results. In a viral video posted on TikTok, a woman ranted about how she was able to get through “four layers of security in five minutes.”

She begs people to wear their masks, as she believes there was definite exposure at the festival. She notes how she overheard a man boasting that he was able to get in even with a positive COVID-19 test.

In one video captured on Twitter, it shows how they are checking vaccination records. Instead of checking each individual one, the people hold it up and are able to get through. This technique values speed over accuracy, as anyone can hold up a fake vaccination or test and be able to be admitted. One person shows how single day bracelets are sold with fake vaccination records, and claims that it did work.

With huge crowds and no masks, this brings up a definite concern of exposure and spreading an already very contagious and easily transmissible infection. With these people traveling back home, this brings up even more concern.

Many are not sympathizing at all, saying that testing positive for COVID-19 after this festival feels like a no brainer, and that they should have thought it through before going. Other people’s concerns do not fall on the people going to the festival, but the people who might contract the illness after coming in contact with someone who knowingly went to the festival. Similarly, people are concerned for hospitals reaching capacity due to numbers being already high and how this can affect them.
