OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Atlas, a new browser built around its flagship AI assistant. Available today for macOS, Atlas combines traditional web browsing with ChatGPT’s conversational intelligence, creating what OpenAI calls a “super-assistant” that understands your workflow and helps you complete tasks directly from your browser window.

Atlas integrates ChatGPT’s core features—search, memory, and agent mode—into one streamlined experience. Instead of toggling between tabs or apps, users can ask ChatGPT to summarize pages, automate tasks, or even complete workflows like booking appointments or compiling research while browsing.
“AI gives us a rare moment to rethink what it means to use the web,” OpenAI said in its announcement. “Your browser is where all your work, tools, and context come together. Atlas brings ChatGPT into that space to help you achieve your goals.”
ChatGPT Atlas functions like a standard browser but with deeper AI integration. Users can open tabs, type URLs, and search—but the browser intelligently interprets what you’re doing. For example, if you’re studying a topic, Atlas can analyze your slides, suggest practice questions, or pull examples without switching screens.
Browser memories are another major feature. With permission, ChatGPT can remember context from visited sites—like articles you’ve read or jobs you’ve researched—and use that knowledge in future conversations.

These memories are optional and user-controlled, with tools to view, archive, or delete them anytime.
OpenAI emphasizes that privacy and transparency are central to Atlas. Users can toggle whether ChatGPT can see specific web pages, open incognito sessions that log out of ChatGPT, or delete browsing history to erase associated memories.
By default, browsing content is not used to train OpenAI’s models, though users can opt in through data controls. The company also introduced new parental controls for Atlas, allowing parents to disable browser memories or agent mode.
Agent mode, introduced earlier this year, is now built directly into Atlas. This feature lets ChatGPT perform multi-step actions across the web. For instance, it can plan a dinner party by pulling recipes, finding grocery stores, and filling an online cart—all within your browser.
In professional settings, Atlas can summarize research, analyze documents, or compile competitive insights. While powerful, OpenAI notes that the feature is still in preview and may make mistakes on complex tasks. To mitigate risks, Atlas includes safety protocols that prevent agents from accessing local files, downloading content, or interacting with sensitive sites without confirmation.
Availability
ChatGPT Atlas is available worldwide today for macOS users across Free, Plus, Pro, and Go tiers. It’s also in beta for Business and Enterprise customers, depending on administrator settings. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android are expected soon.
