AI Agents Are Here and Already Working

AI agents aren’t coming, they’re already here. They’re booking appointments, capturing missed leads, and even boosting revenue. On a recent episode of The AI Download, Shira Lazar sat down with Dr. David Yang, founder of Newo.ai, to explore what he calls “AI employees.”

“Agentic systems remember what happened previously,” David explained. “They’re not just reactive—they’re goal-driven. They can receive a message, respond based on context, and keep going toward a defined outcome.”

That’s what makes them different from traditional generative AI. Think less ChatGPT, more autonomous coworker.

Newo.ai builds AI agents that can function as receptionists, sales assistants, and support staff. One restaurant using their system saw a $40,000 boost in monthly revenue just by capturing six missed calls a day. “You’re losing up to $30,000 per month just from missed calls,” David said. “This is money your marketing has already worked for. You just missed the call.”

And it’s not just restaurants. AI agents are being integrated into dental offices, HVAC services, wellness businesses, and more. They don’t just talk. They connect to your CRM, check availability, and take action. “It provisions a local real phone number,” David said. “You redirect calls to this AI number, and it starts answering and booking.”

Microsoft recently announced plans to embed AI agents across its Azure and Windows platforms, calling itself an “AI agent factory.” Anthropic now uses its Claude model to generate 70% of its own code. Google’s Gemini app has rolled out an “Agent Mode” to plan trips, book events, and complete multi-step tasks. 

Startups like Coworker are taking it further, building AI teammates that write code, draft PRDs, and generate marketing content, all from a single prompt.

David takes a pretty firm stance on job loss: “There are 11 million vacancies for frontline employees. AI employees are not replacing humans—they are actually filling out the gap.”

He also addressed AI failure headlines: “Our platform uses supervisors—many agents whispering to the main one to keep it on track. It’s like our internal thoughts guiding us.”

Building your own AI agent? It’s possible, but not easy. “You’ll spend one month building a good MVP, but then another six months making it real,” David warned.
