The former talk show host revealed over the weekend that her recent relocation to the English countryside was driven by political upheaval—specifically, the re-election of former President Donald Trump last November.
Speaking at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, DeGeneres, 67, said she and her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, 52, had arrived in the UK the day before the U.S. election. “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here,’” she told the audience.

Though the couple initially purchased the Cotswolds property as a part-time retreat, the results of the election turned that plan into a permanent relocation. “Yes,” DeGeneres responded when asked directly if Trump’s win cemented their decision to stay. The theater later confirmed the accuracy of her comments.
DeGeneres offered a bleak outlook on the state of the U.S. “I wish we were at a place where it was not scary for people to be who they are. I wish that we lived in a society where everybody could accept other people and their differences,” she said. “So until we’re there, I think there’s a hard place to say we have huge progress.”
The comedian also criticized recent moves by the Southern Baptist Church to potentially reverse marriage equality. “They’re trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it,” she said. “Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we’re going to get married here.”
